Lindfield FC Book Montgomery Cup Semi-Final Place After Gritty Quarter-Final Win

Lindfield FC2 Feb - 09:35

When it mattered most, the Swans delivered.

Lindfield FC secured their place in the Montgomery Cup semi-finals with a hard-fought victory over a fearless Wivelsfield Green FC side who arrived with nothing to lose and made it a real contest from start to finish.

The visitors struck first in the 24th minute, catching the Swans off guard early on. A dangerous cross into the box found Wivelsfield Green striker Jamie Waterman, whose towering presence proved too much as he powered home a near-post header to put Lindfield 0–1 down in the quarter-final.

Lindfield responded with determination, but the game quickly turned into a physical and tactical battle, with Wivelsfield Green defending stubbornly and breaking with purpose. Just before the interval, the breakthrough finally came.

In the 40th minute, Lindfield were awarded a penalty following sustained pressure in the box. Andrew Brown stepped up and calmly placed the ball into the bottom left corner, levelling the score at 1–1 and sending the teams into half-time all square.

The second half saw both sides push for a winner, with chances at either end and the intensity expected of a cup quarter-final. Neither team looked willing to settle, and the match remained finely balanced deep into the closing stages.

The decisive moment arrived in the 81st minute. A corner was sent long to Aaron Walsh, who showed great awareness to return the ball towards the far post. Alexander Ternouth attacked it aggressively, throwing himself into a powerful header that found the back of the net and sent the Swans into the lead.

It proved to be the match-winning goal in a contest that demanded resilience, patience, and composure under pressure. Full credit goes to Wivelsfield Green, who pushed Lindfield all the way and made this a true cup battle.

Lindfield FC now move on to the Montgomery Cup semi-finals, carrying momentum and belief after a victory built on character when it mattered most.
