Lindfield FC were crowned cup champions last night after a nerve-shredding final against Balcombe FC, settled only by a dramatic penalty shootout following a fiercely contested 0–0 draw in normal time.
From the first whistle, it was clear this was never going to be a straightforward affair. Both sides created chances throughout the 90 minutes, but neither could find a breakthrough. Defensively, the game was outstanding on both ends, with Lindfield’s back line standing particularly strong under pressure.
At the heart of that resilience was Felix Attfield-Davis, who delivered a commanding performance and rightfully earned Man of the Match honours. Time and time again, he stepped in with crucial tackles and composure, ensuring Lindfield stayed in the fight.
With no goals to separate the teams, the final went straight to penalties and that’s where the real drama began.
Aaron Walsh stepped up first for Lindfield, showing nerves of steel by calmly placing his effort straight down the middle as the keeper dived to his right. Balcombe responded in kind, also converting their first penalty.
Next up was Stu Brown, who confidently dispatched his effort into the right side netting to restore Lindfield’s advantage. Balcombe’s next taker stepped forward but this time, Lindfield goalkeeper Rob Ternouth produced a huge moment, diving sharply to his left to pull off a massive save.
Sensing the momentum shift, Grant Reed stepped up and coolly slotted his penalty home, sending the keeper the wrong way. The pressure mounted on Balcombe and it told. As the crowd ramped up the noise, their next penalty taker struck the crossbar, handing Lindfield a golden opportunity.
That left Matt Jasper with the chance to win it.
Calm. Composed. Clinical.
One step back, a steady run-up and a perfectly struck right-footed finish flew into the top right corner. No saving that.
Cue absolute scenes.
Lindfield players, staff, and supporters erupted in celebration as the final whistle sparked unforgettable scenes. A game defined by discipline, resilience, and big moments was ultimately decided by ice-cold penalties and Lindfield held their nerve when it mattered most.
A cup final for the ages.
And to any Balcombe lads having a read. Fair play, you made it a battle… but next time, maybe aim a little lower than the crossbar.
